The Calling of a Disciple

Many people call themselves Christians, but what does it truly mean to be a disciple of Christ?

Being a disciple is more than attending church, listening to sermons, or saying that we believe in Jesus. A disciple is someone who chooses to surrender their life to God, follow His ways, and allow Him to transform their heart.

Jesus did not only call people to believe in Him. He called them to follow Him.

“Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.”
Matthew 16:24 KJV
A true disciple does not simply believe in Jesus. A true disciple follows Jesus.

The Cost of Following Christ

Discipleship comes with a cost. Jesus made it clear that following Him requires commitment, sacrifice, and a willingness to put God first.

A disciple must be willing to surrender their own will and seek God's purpose above personal desires.

This does not mean a believer will never struggle. It means their heart is continually being shaped to become more like Christ.

“And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.”

God calls us to move beyond simply hearing His Word and begin living it. A disciple allows the Word of God to guide their choices, relationships, priorities, and daily life.

A Disciple Must Deny Pride and Self

One of the greatest barriers to spiritual growth is pride. Pride can prevent people from receiving correction, surrendering to God, and acknowledging their need for Him.

A true disciple understands that everything we have comes from God and that we need His guidance every day.

“God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.”
James 4:6 KJV

Humility allows us to come before God with an open heart. It allows Him to correct us, teach us, and grow us spiritually.

A disciple does not seek to glorify self but desires for God to receive the glory.

“He must increase, but I must decrease.”
John 3:30 KJV

A Disciple Lives a Life of Obedience

Obedience is an important part of discipleship. A person cannot claim to follow Christ while continually rejecting His instructions.

Jesus said:

“If ye love me, keep my commandments.”
John 14:15 KJV

Obedience does not mean we earn God's love through our works. Instead, obedience is a response to the love and grace God has already shown us.

A disciple seeks to understand God's Word and apply it to everyday life.

“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.”
James 1:22 KJV

A Disciple Seeks God First

A true disciple develops a relationship with God through prayer, worship, and studying His Word.

They do not only seek God during difficult seasons. They seek Him daily because they desire fellowship with Him.

“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
Matthew 6:33 KJV

Seeking God first helps us remain spiritually focused and allows His Word to guide our decisions.

A Disciple Lives a Life of Repentance

Being a disciple does not mean a person will never make mistakes. The difference is that a disciple does not desire to remain in sin.

When they recognize that they have fallen short, they turn back to God in repentance.

God desires a heart that is honest and willing to change.

“Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.”
Psalm 51:6 KJV

Through confession and repentance, believers receive God's forgiveness and cleansing.

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
1 John 1:9 KJV

A Disciple Overcomes Temptation Through God's Strength

Every believer faces temptation, but disciples learn to depend on God rather than relying only on their own strength.

Scripture reminds us that temptation is common to humanity and that God remains faithful.

“There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful...”
1 Corinthians 10:13 KJV

A disciple continues to pray, resist temptation, seek God, and depend upon the Holy Spirit for strength.

A Disciple Shares the Gospel

Disciples are not called to keep the message of Jesus Christ to themselves. Jesus commanded His followers to go into the world and make disciples.

“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:”
Matthew 28:19 KJV

A disciple shares God's truth and love, encourages others, and points people toward a relationship with Jesus Christ.

Sharing the Gospel is not about receiving recognition. It is about allowing God to use our lives as a light for others.

“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.”
Matthew 5:14 KJV

How to Grow as a Disciple Every Day

Growing as a disciple requires daily commitment. Spiritual maturity develops as we continually surrender ourselves to God and practice what His Word teaches.

  • Spend time in prayer.
  • Read and study God's Word.
  • Repent when you fall short.
  • Practice forgiveness and love.
  • Walk in humility.
  • Resist temptation.
  • Share the Gospel with others.
  • Seek God's direction before making decisions.
  • Remain willing to obey when God corrects you.

Spiritual growth is a lifelong journey. God continues His work in those who belong to Him.

“Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:”
Philippians 1:6 KJV

Are We Truly Following Christ?

A true disciple is not someone who claims perfection. A disciple is someone who continually seeks God with a surrendered heart.

A disciple follows Christ, obeys His Word, repents when they fall, resists temptation, grows in humility, and desires to see others come to know Jesus.

Am I only a believer in words, or am I truly a disciple who follows Christ daily?

May we examine our hearts, surrender our lives to God, and allow Him to make us faithful disciples for His Kingdom.
